Gambling can be addictive. Please play responsibly and only bet what you can afford to lose. Get help

Responsible gambling

Gambling should be entertainment. It is not a way to make money, and it is never a way to recover money already lost. This page covers the warning signs, the tools that actually work, and where to get free confidential help.

The rules that keep it entertainment

  • Decide your limit before you deposit, not while you are playing.
  • Only stake money you can lose entirely without it affecting anything that matters.
  • Never chase a loss. Chasing is the single most reliable predictor of a serious problem.
  • Never gamble with borrowed money, including credit cards, overdrafts and loans.
  • Set a time limit as well as a money limit. Long sessions erode judgement.
  • Do not gamble to escape stress, low mood or boredom.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Any one of these on its own may mean little. Several together are worth acting on.

  • Gambling for longer or with more money than you intended
  • Returning to win back losses
  • Hiding how much you gamble from people close to you
  • Borrowing, selling things, or using money meant for bills
  • Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut down
  • Gambling affecting work, sleep, or relationships

Tools that work

Every licensed operator must offer these. If a site makes them hard to find, that tells you something about the site.

  • Deposit limits. Set daily, weekly or monthly caps. Reductions apply immediately; increases should have a cooling-off delay.
  • Loss and session limits. Caps on what you can lose or how long you can play.
  • Reality checks. Periodic on-screen reminders of elapsed time and net position.
  • Time-out. A short break, usually 24 hours to six weeks.
  • Self-exclusion. A longer block, typically six months or more, which cannot be reversed early.
  • Multi-operator schemes. Blocking yourself across many sites at once rather than one at a time.
  • Bank card gambling blocks. Many banks now offer these in-app, and they are effective.
  • Blocking software. Third-party tools that block gambling sites at device level.

A note on odds

Every casino game has a built-in mathematical advantage for the house. Over enough play, that advantage decides the outcome regardless of strategy, system or luck.

No betting system overcomes it. Anyone selling one is selling you something that cannot work.

Our own position

We publish reviews of gambling sites and we earn from some outbound links. That gives us an obvious interest, and you should read what we publish with that in mind.

What we will not do is pretend the odds are better than they are, hide withdrawal complaints, or promote a site our players have rated badly. Our method is set out on the How we review page.
